Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce, in collaboration with 16 government agencies, private organizations, and nine leading e-commerce platforms such as eBay, Lazada, Shopee, and TikTok Shop, is taking decisive action against substandard products sold online. This initiative seeks to safeguard consumers from low-quality and non-compliant goods.
Key aspects of the crackdown include:
- Immediate Removal of Substandard Products: Any item failing to meet quality standards will be swiftly removed from online marketplaces.
- Platform Responsibility: E-commerce platforms are now responsible for monitoring sellers and removing illegal or substandard products. Clear oversight guidelines are being established to improve product monitoring.
- Public Awareness Campaigns: Educational campaigns will inform consumers about the risks of purchasing low-quality or illegal goods.
- Strengthened Legal Enforcement: The committee for the management and resolution of illegal goods and business violations is reinforcing legal enforcement.
The effects of this initiative are already evident. During the second half of 2024, the average monthly value of illegal and substandard goods imports fell by 8%, dropping to 3.64 billion baht from 3.95 billion baht in the first half. This partnership between the government and leading e-commerce platforms enhances consumer safety in online shopping and motivates businesses to uphold higher product standards.
This collaborative effort not only curtails the influx of illegal and substandard goods but also fosters trust in the digital marketplace. By prioritizing stringent quality control measures, the initiative encourages fair competition among sellers and promotes a healthier e-commerce ecosystem. Moving forward, the government plans to expand its monitoring capabilities and strengthen partnerships with more platforms to sustain this positive momentum, ensuring long-term benefits for both consumers and businesses alike.
