Hon. Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Speaker of the Maldives People’s Majlis, delivered a speech at the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva, held from October 13-17, 2024.
Speaking on the theme “Harnessing Science, Technology, and Innovation for a More Peaceful and Sustainable Future,” the Speaker emphasized the Maldives’ commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development, particularly in addressing climate change. He highlighted President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s initiatives announced at COP28, including generating 33% of electricity from renewable sources in five years and planting five million trees.
He also discussed the role of parliaments in closing digital divides and the Maldives’ efforts in AI for public services and environmental monitoring. The Speaker stressed the need for ethical frameworks for science, technology, and innovation, alongside regulation to protect democracy from disinformation.
The Speaker concluded by expressing concern over the violence in Palestine and Lebanon, calling for immediate ceasefires.
